Tax Mitigation Strategies

Services

Identify the timing, location, and giving decisions worth reviewing with your CPA each year, so taxes are planned for rather than discovered in April.

Your CPA reports the year. Planning shapes it.

Tax preparation looks backward at what happened. Tax planning looks forward at what could happen differently: which account a holding sits in, when a gain is realized, whether a low-income year is used for a Roth conversion, how a charitable gift is made, and how retirement withdrawals are sequenced. For California residents, who pay some of the highest state income tax rates in the country and whose capital gains are taxed as ordinary income at the state level, these decisions carry real weight.

Palm Coast does not prepare tax returns or give tax advice. What we do is make sure the tax dimension of every financial decision is visible, bring the specific questions to your CPA before the year ends rather than after, and keep the investment plan, the income plan, and the tax plan pointed in the same direction.

What the work covers

Where planning changes the tax result

Asset location

Which investments belong in taxable accounts, which in tax-deferred, and which in Roth is a decision with a compounding effect. Holdings that generate ordinary income or frequent gains generally belong where they are sheltered; long-term, tax-efficient holdings can sit in taxable accounts.

Timing of gains, losses, and income

Realizing losses to offset gains, spreading a large sale across years, harvesting gains in a low-bracket year, and managing exposure to the 3.8 percent net investment income tax are all questions of when, not whether.

Roth conversions and retirement account strategy

The years between leaving work and starting Social Security and required distributions can be the best window for conversions. The decision is evaluated each year against your bracket, Medicare premium thresholds, and what your heirs would face.

Charitable and family giving

Giving appreciated securities instead of cash, bunching several years of gifts into a donor-advised fund, qualified charitable distributions from an IRA, and annual exclusion gifts to family each change the tax result of generosity you already intend.

How Palm Coast approaches it

A yearly rhythm, coordinated with your CPA

01

Understand the tax picture

We review recent returns and the current year’s expected income to see where you sit in the federal and California brackets, which thresholds are near, and which carryforwards or elections exist.

02

Identify the decisions

Investment, income, retirement, giving, and business decisions are checked for their tax dimension, and a short list of specific questions is prepared for your CPA, with the analysis they need to answer them.

03

Act before year end, then repeat

Decisions are implemented in the accounts we manage and coordinated elsewhere, in time to matter for the year. The cycle repeats annually, and mid-year when a large event such as a sale or inheritance changes the picture.

See what to expect

Who tax mitigation planning is for

This work is for California households with meaningful taxable investments, retirement accounts, equity compensation, business income, or charitable intentions, and for anyone facing a large one-time event: a business sale, an inheritance, a concentrated stock position, or the start of retirement. It is most effective as an ongoing part of planning rather than a one-time review.

Palm Coast does not prepare tax returns or provide tax or legal advice; the strategies described here are planning topics to be confirmed with your CPA. Tax planning runs through investment management, income planning, and equity compensation planning.

Frequently asked questions

Does Palm Coast replace our CPA?

No. Your CPA prepares returns and gives tax advice. Palm Coast makes sure the tax consequences of financial decisions are considered before they are made and brings organized questions and analysis to your CPA, so the two of you are working from the same facts. Many clients find the coordination itself is where the value comes from.

Why does California make tax planning more important?

California taxes capital gains as ordinary income, has some of the highest marginal state rates in the country, and does not give preferential treatment to qualified dividends. Decisions about when to realize gains, where to hold income-producing assets, and how to give to charity therefore have a larger effect for California residents than in states with low or no income tax.

What is tax-loss harvesting and does it always help?

Tax-loss harvesting sells a holding at a loss to offset realized gains or a limited amount of ordinary income, while keeping the portfolio’s exposure through a similar but not identical investment. It helps when there are gains to offset and when wash-sale rules are respected; it is a deferral rather than an elimination of tax, and it is not a reason to hold a poor investment.

How should we handle a year with a very large gain, such as a business sale?

Ideally, the planning happens before the sale closes: charitable contributions of stock or interests, installment structures, qualified small business stock treatment, and the timing of other income can all matter and most cannot be arranged afterward. Palm Coast coordinates that analysis with your CPA and attorney as part of exit planning.
