Business Owner Retirement Planning
Why Your Business Should Support Your Retirement, Not Replace It
A business can be a powerful part of retirement planning, but owners need personal wealth, tax, and exit strategies beyond the company itself.

Communities we serve
A small city on the Santa Barbara County coast, about 45 miles up the 101, with beaches along its whole southern edge and the county’s greatest concentration of greenhouses in the valley behind it.
Carpinteria is about 45 miles from the Palm Coast office on Townsgate Road in Westlake Village, a longer trip than to most of the communities on this site. The drive follows the 101 west through the Conejo Valley and Ventura, then along the coast past the Rincon to the Santa Barbara County line and into the city.
Meetings take place by Zoom or in person at the Westlake Village office, whichever you prefer. Meeting format and availability can be discussed when scheduling, and the first conversation is complimentary.

About Carpinteria
Carpinteria incorporated in 1965 and counted 13,264 residents in the 2020 census. The city lists its economy as agriculture, tourism and retail, light industry, and research and development. The Carpinteria Valley behind the city holds the greatest concentration of greenhouses in Santa Barbara County, a pattern that began in 1962 with cut flowers, orchids, and potted plants.
For a household that owns farmland or a family business, the planning questions involve the next generation from the start: who runs it next, how the family holds the land, and what the children will owe in property tax. Proposition 19 changed that last answer in 2021. A family farm can still pass from parents to children at the parents’ property tax value, up to a limit adjusted every two years. Unlike the family home, the farm does not have to become the child’s principal residence.
Planning priorities
Succession inside the family or a sale outside it, with the business and the land valued and the timing planned with your attorney and CPA.
Trusts, titling, and Proposition 19’s family farm exclusion, so you decide the property tax question and the estate plan together.
Turning a sale, a lease, or years of reinvested profit into retirement income, with a plan for which accounts pay for what.
Property and liability coverage for a household that owns land or a business, and umbrella limits sized to what is at risk.

Yes, up to a limit, under Proposition 19’s family farm exclusion. Your children keep your taxable value unless, at the transfer, the farm’s market value exceeds it by more than $1,044,586, the limit from February 16, 2025 to February 15, 2027. If it does, the county reassesses only the value beyond that. Unlike a family home, the farm does not need to become a child’s principal residence. Claims go to the Santa Barbara County Assessor.
With what the sale has to pay for. Before you talk to a buyer, Palm Coast works out what the family needs from the proceeds, what the business and any land are worth, and how the timing and structure of the sale affect the tax. That work is easier years ahead of a sale than after an offer arrives.
Mostly in where the paperwork goes. State law sets the rules for property tax, trusts, and income tax in both counties. A Proposition 19 claim goes to the Santa Barbara County Assessor, and a probate goes to the Santa Barbara County Superior Court.
