About Ventura

What planning tends to look like in Ventura

Ventura takes its official name, San Buenaventura, from the mission Junípero Serra founded here in 1782. The city incorporated in 1866 and has been the county seat since 1873, so the County of Ventura’s government center is here, along with the Ventura County Employees’ Retirement Association. Patagonia and The Trade Desk, a Nasdaq-listed company, both have their headquarters in the city.

County employees can build a VCERA pension alongside the county’s 457 and 401(k) plans, and the payout option they choose at retirement sets the pension they receive for life. Employees of a public company can end up with much of their net worth in its stock without deciding to. And the Thomas Fire, which began on December 4, 2017, damaged or destroyed 644 homes inside the city limits. Hundreds of households have since rebuilt, and coverage written before the fire may not reflect what rebuilding costs now.

Planning priorities

Planning questions that come up in Ventura

Company stock and the tax on each sale

Restricted stock units, employee stock purchase plan shares, and trading windows, with a plan for what to sell, when, and how the tax gets paid.

A VCERA pension and the rest of retirement

The payout option, the county’s 457 and 401(k) accounts, Medicare, and Social Security, planned together so the pension fits the household’s other income.

Coverage for a rebuilt or repaired home

Dwelling limits measured against current rebuilding costs, extended replacement cost, and how a rebuild changes the reserve the household keeps.

The house, the trust, and the next generation

Trust funding and titling, and Proposition 19’s rules on what a child keeps of your property tax base if they move into the family home.

Frequently asked questions

Is this page about the City of Ventura or Ventura County?

The City of Ventura, officially San Buenaventura, which is the county seat. Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Oak Park, Simi Valley, Moorpark, and Camarillo are in Ventura County too, and each has its own page. Every page describes the same office in Westlake Village.

Where would a Ventura household meet with Palm Coast?

By Zoom or in person at the firm’s office, whichever you prefer. The office is at 2625 Townsgate Road, Suite 330, Westlake Village, about 30 miles southeast on the 101. The first conversation is complimentary and is arranged through the secure meeting form or by calling (805) 429-4183. Meeting format and availability can be discussed when scheduling.

Should I keep the shares from my employee stock purchase plan?

That depends on the price, the tax, and how much of your net worth is already in the company. Shares you sell at least two years after the offering date and one year after purchase usually receive more favorable tax treatment, but holding them that long keeps you exposed to one stock. Palm Coast weighs that trade-off with you and your CPA.

We rebuilt after the Thomas Fire. What should we review now?

Start with two checks. Confirm that the dwelling limit matches what rebuilding would cost today, because you now know that cost firsthand. Then confirm the home’s tax basis, since insurance proceeds and new construction both change it, and the basis sets the gain when you sell. Palm Coast works through both with you and your CPA.
