About Camarillo
Camarillo incorporated in 1964 and sits on the Oxnard Plain, surrounded by some of the most productive farmland in California. It is home to California State University Channel Islands, Camarillo Airport, and Leisure Village, one of the region’s largest age-restricted communities, and Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu lies just to the south. The result is a city with a notably large retired population alongside working families and military households.
Retirement planning in Camarillo therefore has a distinct texture: households already drawing on pensions, military retirement pay and survivor benefits, Social Security, and portfolios, facing required minimum distributions, Medicare premium thresholds, and the question of how to move to a smaller home without losing a low property tax base. Proposition 19 allows homeowners 55 and older to transfer their tax base to a replacement home anywhere in California, which makes downsizing decisions more flexible than they were.
Planning priorities
Pensions, military pay, Social Security, and portfolio withdrawals sequenced to manage taxes and Medicare premiums year by year.
Planning the years before required minimum distributions begin, including Roth conversions and qualified charitable distributions, with your CPA.
Proposition 19 base-year transfers for homeowners 55 and older, trust funding, and estate documents that match the accounts.
Charitable giving that fits the tax picture, gifts to children and grandchildren, and preparing the next generation.

Yes. Military retirement pay, the Survivor Benefit Plan election, the Thrift Savings Plan, VA benefits, and TRICARE each interact with Social Security, Medicare, and the rest of the household’s plan. Palm Coast coordinates them within one income and estate plan and works with your CPA on the tax dimension.
Under Proposition 19, homeowners 55 and older can transfer their existing property tax base to a replacement home anywhere in California, up to three times, with an adjustment if the new home costs more. That can make downsizing far less costly than it once was. The sale’s capital gain, the timing, and how the proceeds fit your income plan should be reviewed with your CPA before you list.
By Zoom or in person at the firm’s office, whichever you prefer. The office is at 2625 Townsgate Road, Suite 330, Westlake Village, east on the 101 from Camarillo. Meeting format and availability can be discussed when scheduling.
Once they begin, required distributions from pre-tax retirement accounts add taxable income whether or not you need the money, which can raise your bracket and your Medicare premiums. Planning in the years beforehand, through Roth conversions in lower-income years and, after 70½, qualified charitable distributions, can reduce the effect. Palm Coast models this with your CPA.
